Wiccans/Pagans: Why use candles at all four corners?

I've noticed that a lot of magickal practitioners use a candle to call each of the quarters, four different elements. It kind of seems imbalanced to me and I've often wondered why people do this instead of having a candle for fire, a plant for earth, etc. It seems to me that if you want to call an earth elemental, it wouldn't be attracted to fire, even if the candle is green. I would think an undine might even be repelled by a candle. I'm guessing you may call four salamanders.

Emily, the symbolism of the candles is Enlightenment. The color is respective to the magical color of the elemental involved. However it should be noted that not all Wiccans actually use candles. Myself, being mostly blind, tend to use other representations for the Elemental at the quarters, as I can be clumsy and start a fire and not even notice it until the smoke becomes overpowering. I have even tried using those little battery operated "flicker lights" but they just don't seem quite right, so I use little figurines of things such as animals, Fairies, dolphins and dragons at the quarters. The idea of there being ONLY one way to do things is ridiculous and it is the intent which should govern what it is that you do within your circle. The Elementals don't seem to mind and neither do Goddess and God. If it works for you then, by all means, use it.
