How to word a wedding invitation that's semi-formal to formal?
We're getting married at a country club but it's on a lake so we decided to have a "beach" theme. We're not going overboard with the decorations, just some shells, boats, and pails around on the tables. Mostly we're going to decorate with twinkly lights and candles. We want it to be a fun wedding with a lot of dancing and everyone getting up and mingling with each other, but we wanted it to still be at least semi-formal (ie not wearing a Hawaiian shirt and jeans). What are some good wordings/rules to follow when writing the save the dates and invitations to fit this formal event but still give it a fun atmosphere?
The way you're wording this, it sounds more casual than anything else. It's definitely not formal (men in tuxes and ladies in long gowns) and semi-formal may be more dressy than you want. For example, if women can wear nice slacks and a blouse, this isn't semi-formal.
Most people know how to dress for a wedding, especially at a country club - it's like "church wear". So most etiquette types suggest not putting attire on at all, because it can be misleading. If you're worried about any specific people who might wear jeans (which can't be that many people) you're better off addressing this individually than trying to come up with a dress code that tells them not to wear jeans but confuses everyone else.
My wedding was destination, but very similar to yours in that we had a lake estate at Lake Tahoe and then dancing outside with the twinkly lights. I did not suggest dress code, nor did anyone ask.
